Analysis of the poem "Mid-term break" and what we are going to write in the 2 questions

Analysis of the poem

This poem is mainly focusing on the speaker’s childhood memory. This was a really saddening break, not a relaxing and happy one.
The first stanza is informing us that the speaker is waiting at the sick bay for his neighbor to fetch him and does not make up a clue that what was the purpose of the break. However, the fact that the speaker is waiting at the sick bay give the sense that something is wrong. Also, the word “kneeling” describes the slow steady strokes of a bell at a funeral service like the sound of an old school bell announcing the changes of class in school. The use of the word 'knelling' rather than 'tolling' for the school bell has connotations of death.
The second stanza shows how devastating this tragic accident affected the speaker’s family. The fact that “He had always taken funerals in his stride” shows that this tragic accident is a really huge blow to his father as the speaker saw his father crying. In contrast, in the third stanza, the baby 'cooed and laughed and rocked the pram', showing that in some aspects, family life went on as usual and that the baby was immature and did not understand what was happening.
The third and fourth stanzas are linked by enjambment and describes the speaker’s feelings on confronting the people who paid their respects. The speaker also felt embarrassed as the old man shook his hand and expressed his sorrow. This was probably uncomfortable and uncommon to the speaker as he was in a situation of reversed role. He was also knowledgeable about the “whispers” that he was the eldest child in the family.
The second and fifth stanzas are also linked and show how differently the speaker’s mother reacted as compared to his father after the tragic accident. As she 'coughed out angry tearless sighs', it shows that she was too upset to cry and probably did not have any tears to cry out anymore.
In the fifth stanza, Heaney describes in a way that the speaker did not realize the body was his brother’s as the poem mentioned that the ambulance brought the 'corpse'. However, in the sixth stanza, the speaker realized it as he went alone to see the body of his brother. He describes that the presence of snowdrops and soothed his feelings. The speaker again uses enjambment to link this stanza with the seventh, mentioning that his brother now looked paler than the last time he had seen him six weeks previously. The metaphor 'Wearing a poppy bruise on his left temple', poppies being colour of blood as well as a sign of the dead. The final line of the seventh stanza tells us that the little boy was not ran over by the car but banged on one side as he had no “gaudy scars”.
'Mid-Term Break' ends with a single line 'A four foot box, a foot for every year' describes how young the boy was and how small the coffin was. The poem begins with devoid of emotion. Then it progresses into a phase of describing discomfort and difficult emotions in the presence of strangers.

What we are writing for the 2 questions

A) The writer was feeling sad. For the evidence, we are going to include the line “Counting bells knelling classes to a close” as this shows that he feels time is going pass really slowly and this was due to the fact he is really sad when he heard the news of his sibling dying. The writer also felt embarrassed and this can be proven from the lines in stanza 3, evident when the strangers told him they were “sorry for the trouble” and “whispering informed strangers that he was the eldest” made him feel embarrassed. He also feel regretful as the poem states that “I saw him for the first time in six weeks” this line shows that the writer had last seen his brother 6 weeks ago . However, his brother is now dead. Thus, he is regretful as he feel that he should spend more time with his brother and cherish him more while he is alive.

B) The speaker uses several literal devices. The first one he used is onomatopoeia. This can be supported from stanza 3 of the poem. In the line “the baby cooed and laughed and rocked the pram”, “cooed and laughed” is the onomatopoeia. This sets a very awkward mood as it is ironic how the baby is ignorant about the surroundings and still being so happy when everyone else is so sad. The other literal device used is personification. The line “And candles soothed the bedside” showed the use of a personification. This helped to lessen the heavy and depressed mood in the poem, as the candles seem to bo comforting the speaker and the people present.

My little india trip

On 14 May 2010, a Friday, my classmates and I went to "The Spice Queen", a renowned Indian restaurant to have Indian food for lunch, ! "The Spice Queen" is a three-storey building, with its famous chef, Chef Devagi Sanmugam. She is a cookbook author, food columnist, cooking instructor, entrepreneur and professional bon vivant. She has also appeared on cook shows and she wrote 17 recipe books! Therefore, I felt that it was an honour to eat in her restaurant.
I felt that this was an interesting and meaningful experience. It has given me a great impression on indian cusine. I think that the food that my classmates and I ate were delicious and filling. Furthermore, there were many types of indian food that we tried, which I found was really delicious. I also had a chance to experience what it was like to eat with my hands. However, I think I still prefer the fork and the spoon. The food I like most was the chicken and I would most certainly like to try that again some other time.

I like this poem because it rhymes very well and it has a lot of meaning to me. It makes me feel sad and lonely, like when you watch a depressing movie. He writes it in a way that makes people want to read finish the whole thing, although he does not add suspense, his poem is still very interesting and I want to read on and find out what is written in the whole poem.

English Presentation - Mr De Silva

I have presented on Mr De Silva. From the book, it is said that Mr De Silva helped Lila by bringing Lila's sick mother to the hospital and paid all her medicine bill. He also helped Hari by giving Hari his address to clean his car if he came to Bombay. He had also told Hari to bring his father to him so that he could give Hari's father a job. However, when Mr De Silva saw Hari's father, he despised Hari's father as he saw that Hari's father was a toddy addict and he thinks that Hari's father was hopeless,useless and could not earn a living to support their family. Thus, he did not give him the job as he felt that Hari's father did not deserve it. Lastly, Mr de Silva is very rich. He have many servants,a cook and an ayah to wash all his family's clothes.He lives in Mon Repos, a big and beatiful bungalow.

Amish

Education - Amish Schools & Education
The Amish believe strongly in education, but only provide formal education through the eighth grade and only in their own private schools. The Amish are exempt from state compulsory attendance beyond the eighth grade based on religious principles, the result of a 1972 U.S. Supreme Court ruling. One-room Amish schools are private institutions, operated by Amish parents. Schooling concentrates on the basic reading, writing, math and geography, along with vocational training and socialization in Amish history and values. Education is also a big part of home life, with farming and homemaking skills considered an important part of an Amish child's upbringing.

Work - farming is not merely a job or career; it is viewed as a way of life anchored in Scripture, blessed by God and handed down over the generations by Amish ancestors. It provides a seedbed for nurturing strong families in the values of hard work, frugality, responsibility, simplicity and family cooperation.As more family work roles,men usually work on the farm, with women helping from time to time, if needed. Men are also mainly in charge of financial matters, while women do the cooking, washing, cleaning, etc. Children grow up identifying with the parent of their gender. Boys tag along behind their father, and girls stay indoors to help their mother.

Recreation - Recreation in Amish life often focuses on local activities involving nature. Without cars and with many chores, Amish families are more tied to the local community. Sledding, skating, ice hockey, swimming, camping, fishing, and hunting provide breaks from the routines of work. Informal games of softball, corner ball, and volleyball have long been favorites in many Amish communities. Camping in local meadows and wooded areas is also popular in some communities.Families involved in businesses or factory work are finding more time for recreation. “We are more of a leisure people now,” said one businessman. Another shop owner said, “We're business people now, not just backwoods farmers, and sometimes we just need to get away.” Several couples may travel together in a hired van to visit friends and relatives in out-of-state communities. Along the way, they may visit historic sites or a state or national park. Increasingly, groups of Amish charter a bus to a historic village, a zoo, or a natural site as well. Family reunions and picnics are also popular leisure-time activities.Men sometimes rent a hunting cabin for several days or charter a boat to go fishing in eastern waterways or on one of the Great Lakes, depending on where they live. Archery is popular in some areas. Adults who enjoy birding sometimes travel across the country to popular migration sites. Some young men go big game hunting in the Rocky Mountains for a week, equipped with guides and state-of-the-art guns and supplies. Snow and water skiing are popular among some youth.Group singings, barn raisings, "sisters days," "work bees" (sometimes called frolics) and other similar activities are important social events that blend work and leisure or, in the case of singings, leisure and worship together in most Amish communities. Such activities within church districts and sometimes across districts weave leisure into the larger social and spiritual framework.Recreation and travel is on the rise among more progressive families. Nevertheless, Amish leisure, for the most part, is not commercialized and remains connected to nature. It is almost always community oriented, revolving around family and friends.

Philosophy - Technology & the Amish
The Amish are averse to any technology which they feel weakens the family structure. The conveniences that the rest of us take for granted such as
electricity, television, automobiles, telephones and tractors are considered to be a
temptation that could cause vanity, create inequality, or lead the Amish away from
their close-knit community and, as such, are not encouraged or accepted in most
orders. Most Amish cultivate their fields with horse-drawn machinery, live in houses
without electricity, and get around in horse-drawn buggies. It is common for Amish
communities to allow the use of telephones, but not in the home. Instead, several
Amish families will share a telephone in a wooden shanty between farms. Electricity
is sometimes used in certain situations, such as electric fences for cattle, flashing
electric lights on buggies, and heating homes. Windmills are often used as a source
of naturally generated electric power in such instances. It is also not unusual to
see Amish using such 20th-century technologies as inline skates, disposable diapers
and gas barbecue grills, because they are not specifically prohibited by the Ordnung.
Technology is generally where you will see the greatest differences between Amish
orders. The Swartzentruber and Andy Weaver Amish are ultraconservative in their use
of technology - the Swartzentruber, for example, do not even allow the use of battery
lights. Old Order Amish have little use for modern technology, but are allowed to
ride in motorized vehicles including planes and automobiles, though they are not allowed to own them. The New Order Amish permit the use of electricity, ownership of
automobiles, modern farming machines, and telephones in the home.

My opinion - I feel that the way that the Amish live is very interesting. They are doing a great part in saving the earth by not using much of technology. However, I cannot understand how they can live without technology. For me, technology is in my daily life. I have been born into a world full of technology and I feel that technology for me is an essential part of my everyday life. For example, when we are lost in a car, most of us will just use the GPS system which could easily get us back on track. I also cannot imagine living without motorised technology. For me, I already take one and a half hours to get home by public transport. If I ride bicycle, I would have to take like four hours... to me, that is a total waste of time. However, if everyone can adapt to this change of not having any motorised technology or a small number of them, global warming will not form as a problem to us. At least not yet. In conclusion, I feel that the way Amish live is very interesting, they can live without technology which i definitely cannot do. However, they are doing a part in saving the world, which many of us talk so much about but do not do anything.

UN means NOT

There are several prefixes that mean "not" in one way or another. However, they are different, so sometimes you will have two different "not" suffixes in front of the same ending, and the two words will mean different things.

An "unarmed" man does not have a weapon. If the man is "Disarmed," then there was a weapon but it was taken away (and 'disarming' has several meanings). "Uninterested" means you "do not have the mind or feelings engaged." You're not involved; you don't care. "Disinterested," however, has come to mean "not having a selfish motive or interest." A "disinterested" person is good to help settle an argument.

Reflections on Lamb to the slaughter

I feel that acting Lamb to the slaughter was a good experience for me. Ms Kala taught us the basic acting which I think will prove useful as an additional skill. The problems faced by our groups were:
1. No specific date which we rehearse the full play
2. We could not remember the lines we had to say
3. It was hard not to laugh when we were acting
4. It was hard not to face our backs to the audience while acting
Our performance:
I feel that our performance was not very good, because we were unable to remember most of our lines and we kept laughing during the act. I feel that our play was also quite good because we managed to get all the props though not all resembles the real things.
What we learnt:
I feel that we learnt a lot of things. We learnt basic acting and the DO’s and DON'TS
of acting. I learnt that we need teamwork to do many things, including acting. I feel that this acting was enjoyable, and it also made us learn the importance of teamwork and we need practice for everything we do. Overall, I feel that this acting was a good experience for us.

My thoughts on “The terror begins at home” and “Turning the Taliban” on newsweek

The terror begins at home - The writer who wrote this article thinks that America's government is telling its citizens to believe in the government, while they do not make them mentally prepared for attacks. I think that Americans are shocked after what happened during 9/11. However I feel that they have to be prepared for such attacks.
Turning the Taliban - U.S is planning to lure away thousands of Taliban with offers of jobs and money, in exchange for peace. However, the young people says that it won't work. They are not willing to surrender for money, or enter any negotiations with their enemies. I feel that they will not surrender to anything because what they had suffered is too much.
From the articles, I learnt that we should always be physically and mentally prepared. We should be trained to handle such situations, for men there is national service, for women, what is there? By being prepared, we can reduce the damage caused by the terrorist if they successfully managed to get an attack on us. And Singaporeans should also know that money cannot buy everything.

Dear Diary,
Today is a miserable day for both you and me .Today I will mourn the death of my husband who wanted to leave me. At first , when he came home he seem normal and there was nothing particularly different from a normal day , it is only when,he sat on the couch and unusually drank two cups of whiskey(one normally made by me which he drank in two gulps and another made by himself which was strong).When I asked him if he wanted supper he also acted strangely insisting me not to get them.I was really quite shock at his strange reactions .Moments later he told me the bad news .At that moment ,I really thought that things will soon work out and we will be back to our normal lives.He crossed the line when he shouted at me not to give him supper.I was astonished and infuriated .I did not know what to do and I followed my natural instincs and slammed the leg of lamb ,that was supposedly his supper, on the back of his head.He was dead and I was regretful and happy at the same time.Happy that I have let my sorrows and anger out but regretful that my unborn child will be affected for my wrong doings.
So I had came up with a plan to cover up this incident .I had to find an alibi which I knew.Sam! I thought. Immediately, I practise my facial expression before leaving home to the supermarket.I completely acted normally at the supermarket.Task1 was complete.
When I reach back home I told myself there was no need to act if I see something unusual I would naturally be shocked.I came home and telephoned the police.They came to my house and analyse the problem they guaranteed my husband was dead and when to the supermarket to ask Sam if I was acting normally.I quite happy when I overheard the police saying that I was indeed acting normally at the supermarket.My second task was not that easy though.I would have to eliminate any evidence to get away with the crime.Before going to the supermarket ,I purposely cooked the leg of lamb in my oven.My job now was to feed the leg of lamb to the police officer.To my surprise they got tricked and they drank some whiskey and ate the leg of lamb too.Yes! I got away with the crime .I can't beleive I fooled the policeand for that I was overwhelmed with joy.

On 23 August 2010, a wife of a detective kills her husband when she knows that her husband was seeing another woman.He was killed with a lamb leg that was huge. Mrs Maloney was apparently planning of a method to get rid of her husband. She had tried to kill him in certain occasions but failed to .Mrs Maloney had knew about her huband's situation before she killed him.She made use of the oppurtunity when she purposely fed her husband two glasses of whiskey .When her husband was drowsy, she took the frozen meat and walk towards her husband. She killed him immediately when she swung it up and smack him.Mary Ma loney also had an accomplice which was the stall keeper at the convenient stall,Sam. He told the police that Mrs Maloney was acting normally when she was not.The leg of lamb was fed to the officers that were doing the investigation.The policemen could have been helping her as they did not ask her to get out of the apartment.The whole incident was planned and carried out carefully,the only people who figure that Mary Maloney was the murderer was the neighbours of Mrs Maloney's neighbour who felt that she was hiding something and approached the police.In the end she let the cat out of the bag when police interrogated her with whiskey and she blurted everything out.The murder was done 3 years ago .

100 words why I prefer the book to the movie

100 words why I prefer the book to the movie :

The book was more action-packed and thrilling and full of suspense. The book also had a more detailed description of the action and the characters, it also had more characters than the movie. Although seeing it on the big screen makes it look more colourful and make it look nicer than the book, the book was still nicer as it had more battles and more mysteries and adventures. I feel that if the movie was fully based on the book, I would have prefered the movie, because of it's cool special effects and the fact that you can see it on the screen not visualising in your head. Overall, I like the book better because the storyline is better in the book than in the movie.

Percy and his friends go on a quest to prevent an apocalyptic war between the Greek gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades.
The movie : Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (known as Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief in the UK and Australia) is a fantasy-adventure film directed by Chris Columbus. The film is a adaptation of The Lightning Thief, the first novel in the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series by Rick Riordan. It stars Logan Lerman as the titular Percy Jackson alongside an ensemble cast which includes Brandon T. Movie review : directed by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Stephen Lang. The film is set in the year 2154, when humans are mining a precious mineral called unobtanium on Pandora, a lush moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na'vi—a sentient humanoid species indigenous to Pandora. The human kind lost in the end of a long and bloody battle.

Reflections : I feel that avatar was an exciting, action-packed and suspensful movie. The part i like best is the part when the human kind fought the avatar and the avatar won. I feel that the special effects in this movie were terrific. It made me glue my eyes to the screen. I feel that the movie was a movie suitable for all ages. I think that no matter how young or old you are, you will still enjoy the movie. Even though the movie was the longest movie I have every watched, I would still prefer it to be longer because it was action-packed and not boring. I would like to watch a movie like this again. I hope that there will be more movies with the same good points, just different plots.

SCAMPER-Adeline Ng Ai Choo and The Teacher

Dear Diary,
What should I do? What can I do? I tell you in a frank manner I can't go on like this, can't go on! Father,everyday he will tell me to study hard and get good marks, but even though I study very hard, cannot remember or concentrate. My mind has gone blank, blank, blank!!! I just cannot concentrate! I wish I could just relax but Dad say I have to work hard for exams. I must pass! If I fail, I will sure to be getting a good caning, Mum will be so disappointed. I don't disappoint them! Dad bought me a new watch and says that he will go without a watch as he wants me to study hard while Mum loves me so much that she says she will die if I don't pass the exams as it will a shame to Father as people will laugh at him.I must do well in the exams to my parents happy...
"Adeline Ng Ai Choo!" screamed the teacher, "What are you doing under your table? What is that you are writing? Give it to me now!" Adeline had no choice but to hand over her diary. The teacher began to read it. As soon as she read it, she knew about Adeline's condition and she passed it back to her and said, " here is your diary, Adeline, you can have it back. I expect you to stay back everyday for one and a half hours this term till your "O" levels examinations come."
The teacher began giving Adeline after school classes to cope with the work and revise through what she had been teaching over the past few monthes. She gave Adeline a notebook to jot down notes so as to remember and have something to revise.
One week before the exams, the teacher had a pre test. Adeline had gone through all her notes and managed to pass the test with a decent marks. The teacher continued to give Adeline after school classes. Finally, the "O" level examinations had came. Adeline had gone through all her notes and had revise through all her textbooks and notes. She began doing the test. It seemed not as tough anymore.
Two weeks later, the "O" level results had came out. When Adeline and her parents collected the results, a bright grin flashed across their faces. She had managed to pass her "O" levels with flying colours! Adeline, not forget her teacher's efforts to help her get these grades, immediately rushed to the staff room with her parents. However, she did not manage to get to see her teacher. All that was left there was a pen and a note saying : Adeline, sorry for not having a chance to say bye. Due to my old age, I will be retiring. However, I have a note for you at the end of your notebook.
Adeline immediately opened up her notebook to the last page. There was a paragraph of words in there neatly written. "Adeline I believe that you have at least passed your "O" levels. The dangers of blogging and ways to prevent them.

1st danger : the blog can be view by anyone, anywhere.
Way to prevent : change the settings such that only people that you allow is able to
view the blog.
2nd danger : others may post nasty stuff on the blog ( whether it's people you allow
or those who are not allowed when your blog is still for public
viewing )
Way to prevent : make rules to prevent them from writing nasty stuff. If they
continue, change the settings such that they would not be able to
access your blog.
3rd danger : you may accidentally say out some personal infomation.
Way to prevent : be extra careful on what you say and check what you write.
